OUR DEFINITION OF REGIONAL INTEGRATION
We defined regions as territorially based subsystems of the international system. The integration of regions, then, denotes the process whereby territorial based subsystems increase their level of interaction.
The main focus of this module is on the integration of states into continental or world regions, such as the European Union (EU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the North Atlantic Free Trade Area (NAFTA), Mercado Común del Sur (Mercosur), Organization for African Unity (OAU) ...
Accordingly, the states are considered as subsystems of a regional system, which itself is part of the international system.
